Surely, Swiftly, Fatally...
Swiftly, Surely, Fatally... at CAN's offsite gallery in Newport News, VA (August-December 2024), united Jackson Taylor's abstracted prints—lithographs, etchings, and risographs—meditating on the fragility of capitalistic control through collaged elements of abject Americana and precariously pieced cultural identities, with Bryan Ortiz's compelling large graphite drawing on canvas. Ortiz's work features paneled vignettes of the charged, intimate moment a boxing referee breaks up a fight. The exhibition highlighted the distinct materialities of printmaking and drawing, inviting contemplation on the delicate balance of intention and chance, and the powerful impact of subtle artistic gestures in exploring societal structures and raw human encounters.
